sex+ is a new blog, and the creative outlet for an overworked academic. I will be posting (what I think are) interesting opinion stories related to sex and sexuality in the news, media, new research, interesting self-help issues and generally working toward increasing sex positivity (hence the title, sex+).
One of my favorite repeating "sections" will be a sex+ Q & A where YOU or "someone you know" can send me an email, tweet, comment, or submit a question on this website (form on the right -->). I'll try and post a new blog answering questions at least once per week. (Pending enough questions are submitted! Get to it!)
Recently, I was preparing for my Couples and Sex Therapy course, looking for fresh videos and content to keep an already spicy class interesting, when I ran across several documentaries on the topic of what I like to call "genital anxiety." All are available online, for free (linked below)... but what interested me most about these documentaries was that a vast majority of them were created and originally aired in the United Kingdom. Obviously, this is another blatant cry into the night about how uncomfortable we as Americans still are with sexuality, and talking about sex. While most of the world shares our societally-induced shame associated with nudity and intense belief in inadequacy due to genital comparison, at least other countries are starting to talk about it more publicly - which is a good thing. To be warned, some of the videos linked below include graphic scenes of surgery being performed on genitals (such as phaloplasty and labiaplasty), which can be shocking if you haven't prepared yourself for them.
What are your thoughts about nudity, and/or genital shaming? Check out the videos linked below and take a moment to reflect on your comfort levels with the content... what does that say?
